Amy Ward one of our Transition Year Students attended the Royal College of Surgeons TY Mini Med Programme from 11th – 15th January. Amy has written an appraisal of her week in the programme below.

During a week of January I attended the Royal College of Surgeons TY Mini Med programme. We got to spend the week training and working as a doctor at RCSI and Beaumont Hospital. There was over 180 students there so I was a bit nervous on the first day but I made some really nice friends, it was a great week. We were given a bag with a timetable and a coloured top to match your team. I got to see four live surgery’s- Tonsillectomy, Caesarean Section, a gallbladder removal and a Laparoscopic Surgery over the five days.Plenty of questions were asked by the students during the whole week.Medical Students came in to talk to use about there college experience at RCSI. On the Monday my team got to go to the Cancer and Chemo Lab we got to test the different Cells it really felt like I was working there and that was really fun to do. On the Friday we got to the hall and work at different stations like genetics, forensics, blood cells, and many more. Also lectures came in over the week to talk to us about there jobs and make a decision easier about what area to go into if you wanted to do Medicine. At the end of the week jumpers were given to people who asked the most questions, co-operated the best, etc…. Overall the whole week was a great experience and I would recommend anyone interested in Medicine, Physio or Pharmacy to go for this course, you also make some really great friends. –Amy Ward
